Self defense weapons can be divided into two categories: Lethal and less than or non-lethal. Not everyone can or should carry a lethal form of self defense, but there are non lethal alternatives available for everyone. So who should keep a self defense product? Should you?
The purpose of non lethal self defense products is to disable or distract an attacker long enough for the potential victim to escape from a threatening situation or to get help. They are not designed to permanently injure another being.
Here are some of the types of people who carry non lethal weapons:
Law enforcement officers: in addition to carrying firearms, police officers are trained to use non lethal force. Following a use of force continuum, this can be anything from verbal commands to the use of pepper spray, stun guns or batons.
Military personnel: similar to the police, the military use non lethal self defense products for crowd control and general peace keeping.
Women of all ages: one in four women will be sexually assaulted some time in their life. 84% knew their assailant. Since rape continues to be one of the most under reported crimes, these numbers are undoubtedly conservative.
Women who carry guns are also more prone to having them taken away and used against them than men are. This might be due to a number of factors. including a lack of practice, a delay in response, or the inability to actually take another human life. This makes women excellent candidates for non lethal products.
Here's a longer list of people who should carry a non lethal self defense weapon:
runners / walkers / hikers
real estate agents
stay at home moms
home health aides
convenience store workers
college students (male and female)
latch key kids
and on and on
Even if you didn't find yourself on that list, you should consider carrying a self defense product. Male or female, young or old, weak or strong, crime can happen to anyone, anywhere at anytime. Being able to resolve an issue with non lethal force is always the best option.
With options that include pepper spray, stun guns, personal alarms and keychain self defense products, there is something that everyone can carry - even young children.
Why carry a self defense product? Because they work, and because it's better to have it and not need it than it need it and not have it.
